A music group you need to know!
Made up of Daniel Houlemarde and Colin Frazier, The Divison Red is already at the top of our new playlist. They recently released their new LP entitled ‘Chroma Compute’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with the group about how their band name came to be, their favorite song off of the LP, and more!
When did you guys first realize that you wanted to pursue a music career together?
TDR: “We started making music together back in 2006 and to be honest, we just immediately vibed and liked each other’s ideas and approaches to music overall. We’ve been in a few projects together over the years but we always gravitated towards working together. In 2018, we decided to concentrate our energies on our ideas alone.”
How did you come up with your band name ‘The Division Red’?
TDR: “As every musician will tell you, band names, and deciding on them when you’ve come up with ideas can sometimes be really contentious and hard. I think Colin came up with putting red in our band name and I was listening to Joy Division at the time…and I just blurted out ‘The Division Red’…and BAM! That was it.”
Tell us more about your amazing new LP ‘Chroma Compute’.
TDR: ‘Chroma Compute’ is us really backing into and doubling down on the direction we started on the ‘Arcade’ EP and in the singles we released afterwards. I think we had found our sound on that record and we knew it was scalable – at least to us. It’s a record without any fear; we didn’t hold back on trying stuff and playing pretty deeply into other genres. But we always root anything we do around guitar work and ground the over-arching ideas on a foundation of Rock & Roll…because at the heart of it, that’s what we are – a Rock & Roll band.’
If you had to choose, what is your favorite song off of the LP and why?
TDR: ‘This Life Is Beautiful’ is definitely our collective favorite. It’s a huge lament and a cautionary tale of love and life and all the beauty of it despite the broken dreams and setbacks. It’s our spiritual version of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.’
How do you think you guys have grown since your debut in 2018?
TDR: “When we first started, I think we knew what we wanted to do, but we didn’t know how to translate our ideas in the songwriting and recording process. It’s like closing your eyes and imagining something – a statue, a painting or something similar – but when you want to bring that thing into physical existence, you need to know how to use the tools to create it. It’s HARD! I think we grew in the sense that we gained wisdom around the process of writing a good song and also grew in knowing how to use the tools and technologies that are needed to make the songs sound really professional.”
If you could collab with any artist, who would it be and why?
TDR: “We both think bands have to try to do something interesting…to be interesting. It would be a dream come true to collab with Coheed & Cambria. They have really pushed the boundaries of hard rock, emo, metal, pop and prog for well over a decade now and their fans, unlike maybe some other acts, have rewarded them for being innovative and adventurous.”
So far, you guys have received over 100K+ streams on your music, on just Spotify alone! What has been your reaction to your rising fame?
TDR: “It feels really good! You have to fight for those initial fans but its great to see the fight paying off. Scaling is very hard, but we’re starting see way more organic discovery…even deep into our catalog.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
TDR: “We’re available on all major streaming platforms and on youtube where we have an official artist page. Our social media platform of choice is Instagram (@the_division_red) but we’re on Facebook, twitter and TikTok as well.”
Stream ‘Chroma Compute’, available now on all music platforms!
