This NY artist is one to know!
Rachel Bochner is quickly becoming an icon, with over 2 Million streams on her music, on just Spotify alone! She recently released a new single ‘If I’m Gunna Be Sad (I Might As Well Look Hot Doing It)’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Rachel about her first record deal, her upcoming EP, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
R: “I’ve always loved music (singing, listening, going to shows), but it didn’t click for me that I could pursue a career as an artist at first. I wanted music to be a big part of my life, so I thought that meant I should work at a label. In the summer of 2018, I was interning in the A&R department at a label in NYC, and I coincidentally started taking songwriting a lot more seriously at that time too. As I sort of unearthed my love for writing songs, I realized that I was on the wrong side of things at my internship. From that moment on, I knew I needed to be an artist and have been running with that since.”
You just released a new single called “If I’m Gunna Be Sad (I Might As Well Look Hot Doing It)! What inspired you to write the song?
R: “When I originally came to my co-write and collaborator Tiger Darrow’s studio the day we wrote the single, all I knew was that I wanted to make a song we could strut to. We started off writing something that had more of an IDGAF attitude, but it wasn’t quite clicking. There was a moment when we were working on it where we were like… okay, maybe we do kind of give a f*ck… but if we’re going to be sad, we might as well look hot doing it.”
How would you personally describe your music?
R: “I’d describe my music as vulnerable with a little grit, and dark but a little whimsical.”
You have an EP that is coming out this summer! What can you tell us more about the EP and what fans can expect?
R: “This EP airs out some of the messy emotions that come with navigating relationships, heartbreak, and self-love as a twenty-something year old. It touches on a lot of the things we do to make ourselves feel a little better, even if they aren’t the healthiest. It’s fun and fiery and has some of my absolute favorite songs I’ve written.”
If you had to choose, what is your favorite song on the EP and why?
R: “It changes, but recently “Hard to Please” has been hitting particularly hard. It’s one of the more vulnerable songs on the project, so I feel very close to it.”
You just signed a deal with indie label Handwritten Records! What was it like signing your deal/is this your first deal?
R: “This is my first deal, which is really exciting – feels like a big milestone. The Handwritten team is really great, and it’s a totally new experience for me to have an actual team supporting a project. After releasing things totally independently for a few years, I think I got used to wearing so many different hats, which I actually love being able to do, but it’s been amazing to be able to take off some of those hats to have more time to really focus on the creative parts of the music.”
If you could collaborate on a song with any music artist, who would it be and why?
R: “Taylor Swift quite literally raised me, so a collaboration with her would be a full circle dream come true. I’ll also settle for opening her next tour though.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
R: “@rachelbochner on whatever platform you use!!!”
