This music artist definitely knows how to make iconic music.
Texas singer-songwriter Emily Monsen is stepping out into the music industry in an amazing way. Following her recent single ‘in pieces’, she released a new song today entitled ‘How We Used To Be’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Emily about performing live, Miley Cyrus, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
I’ve always wanted to pursue music and it’s always been countered with, “Be realistic.” I was about to graduate from college, and I realized at that point I kind of had two paths I could go down. Either start a corporate job using my degree like most of the other people graduating around me were doing or pursue this thing that I have always wanted so badly. So I decided to choose the latter. I figured it’s now or never and that’s exactly what I did.
Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘How We Used To Be’.
E: “I wrote this song 6 years ago when I was 18. I was completely heartbroken and I didn’t want to face the reality that this relationship I had held so close to my heart was over. I knew it was over though, and I knew it was over for good. I wanted to hold on to all of our past, how we used to be and live in that space instead of feeling all the pain I was feeling. So that’s why I wrote “how we used to be.” I was trying to get over someone and it took me so long until I finally wrote that song, and it made me process the hurt of it all and be able to let it go.”
What is your songwriting process usually like?
E: “My favorite songs usually come to me very fast. It’s like I get in this flow state, and everything starts unraveling and making sense. I hate forcing myself to write when I don’t feel creative or inspired, but sometimes forcing yourself can spark something you didn’t expect. It’s usually a lot of scribbling in my notebook and like 20 different voice memos.”
If you could collab on a song with any artist, who would it be and why?
E: “I would love to collab with Miley Cyrus on a ballad. I think she has such a strong, powerful, and amazing voice. I love her so much. She has so much emotion and soul in her voice. She’s rock, with a little country twang hidden in there, and I love that. I think our voices complement each other well, and I would love to write a song about our terrible ex’s together.”
You performed so many times in March! What do you enjoy the most about performing live?
E: “I love connecting with the audience and feeling the energy from them. You really can feel the energy radiating off of everyone, and I love to have that in person connection. It’s so much better face to face.”
What is your dream venue to perform at?
E: “My dream venue would be to perform at Austin City Limits music festival. Being from Texas, I grew up going to ACL and that would be such a cool, full circle moment.”
Can we expect more music from you this year?
E: “Yes, absolutely! I’m already back in the studio working on more music. I’m very excited for the new music this year.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
E: “I am on Instagram @emilymonsen, Tiktok @emilymonsenmusic, Youtube/Facebook is under Emily Monsen. I’m Emily Monsen on all streaming services as well. Thank you so much!”
