A brand-new song to love!
With over 25 Million streams on just Spotify alone, Olivia Reid is known for her amazing hits such as ‘Above The Clouds’ and ‘Time Is Mine’. Today, she’s back with a brand new single ‘Runner’s High’.
We had the amazing honor of talking to Olivia about songwriting, her rising fame, and more!
What inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?
O: “I’ve always been just completely surrounded by music. I fall asleep to it, I wake up to it, I work to it, I rest to it, I think to it. There’s nothing quite as all-encompassing as music to me, and I think I felt that even when I was little and first got started singing and songwriting. Even at 6, 7, 8 years old writing my first songs, I was really intrigued by the patterns in songwriting. The structures, the poetry off it. I then loved learning about those same patterns in chords on guitar, and discovering them in music production. I’ve always been so dual-minded in that way: on one hand curious about how the scientific patterns of music “works” concretely and on the other hand, just completely emotionally entangled with music in a much more abstract, artistic manner.”
You have a new single called “Runner’s High.” What inspired you to write the song?
O: “I have a hard time resting, and I’m always staying in motion, chasing the ‘runner’s high’ or a feeling of
accomplishment. So, on one hand, this song was a motivational speech to myself or listeners, to keep
cheering yourself on in the race of life and celebrating things you’ve overcome. But at the same time – I’m
acknowledging how tiring the race can be. There are pieces of the song that are a reminder to rest, to be
kind to yourself, and to be present in the moment. That’s what the outro means to me… it’s like a cool
down after the sprint.”
What is your writing process like?
O: “I often run into ideas in the semi-stillness. Like a morning walk, watching a sunset, in the shower – I tend to fill those moments of silence with songs. And that’s where many of the lyrical and melodic ideas for my own personal catalog pop into my mind. My lyrics tend to be more introspective that way, just due to the nature of timing when new ideas arise during “pondering” or “free thinking” time. I’ll try to snag the idea in a voice memo on my phone, or if I can, I’ll usually sit down with a guitar or open up my computer and begin playing with sounds. From there the song starts to take shape. I find the structure (I.e. the chorus, the verse etc) naturally from there, switching things around until all the peaks and valleys of the song feel right. When I write with other artists or write to an instrumental track, I’ll usually freestyle mumble over the song and find little melodies that I like within the mumble truck. I’ll start to polish those melodies up and begin to pair words with the sounds, listening to the production elements to spark the theme of the lyric. It’s all very fluid and changes based on who I’m working with!”
Your music has been added to several official Spotify playlists like Happy Pod, Metropolis, Chill
Tracks, Sunday Session, Dance Hits, and Golden Hour, which got you to 40 million streams. Did
you ever think your music was going to be heard by millions of people on Spotify?
O: “It’s really hard to imagine that many people listening honestly! I think it really starts to set in when
someone sends me a video of the song playing at their gym, or they notice a song of mine in a TV show
they’re watching. Those organic moments where friends and family run into the music are amazing! It’s so
hard to be an independent music artist, and while streaming numbers and playlists can be pretty futile,
hearing about the songs as a part of someone’s life, or hearing from fans what the music means to them –
it’s so impactful. Then picturing millions of people having that listening experience… unimaginable.
A lot of those streams also come from collaborative tracks with folks I’ve never met before, which is so
wild as well. I love how global the music world is for listeners and creators alike. Like “Above the Clouds”
with SŸDE has over 20 million streams on its own, and those guys are from Australia. We made the song
completely remote. Same thing with “Time is Mine” by Kidswaste, Quentin is from France, we made the track remotely and it’s still gaining millions of streams. It’s so cool to imagine people all over the world
listening!”
Do you have more music coming out in 2023?
O: “Yes, yes, yes! At least 5 more songs coming out this year, releasing new singles about every 6 weeks,
with “Runner’s High” kicking of the release on March 3rd! Might have a collaboration track and a remix or
two headed your way this year too, stay tuned :).”
How do you find your inspiration for your music?
O: “In order to have creative output, I’m always looking for inspiration to absorb as input. Traveling to new places, talking to new people, talking to family, reading the news, watching movies, reading books. I love reading books about the brain, consciousness and perception. Once I have all this input, music helps me capture moments I want to hold on to, or feelings I want to understand more. Usually if I feel uninspired, it’s because I have been working too much or checking off to-do lists rather than being p resent in absorbing the world around me. Those are moments of too much output, and not enough input, that remind me to mix it up and absorb something new.”
What music artist would you love to collaborate with?
O: “I would love to collaborate with Amelia and Nick on the Sylvan Esso project. Their combination of folk
style lyrics, metaphors, and melodies, with electronic, analog synths that just smack?? UGH. So good.
They’re a big influence on my writing and production style and I’d be so interested to see what we’d
create together”
