A double-threat!
From acting to singing, Payson Lewis has been taking over the entertainment industry. Today, he’s back with a new collaborative single ‘Back In Time’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Payson about his cover videos era, working with fellow performer Leah Lewis, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
P: “Well, I’ve always had music at the center of my life. But for a long time, I thought I wanted to work behind the scenes in music more than being out front as an artist. It wasn’t until I was graduating college that I really looked at myself in the mirror and thought that if I don’t give this a shot now, I’ll always have those lingering “what ifs” floating around my life. So I dove in and started honing my craft and figuring out what I wanted my music to give and say to the world. So I guess, by some standards, I was a late bloomer…but it’s always been in my bones.”
Tell us more about the meaning behind your amazing new single ‘Back In Time’.
P: ‘Back in Time’ is all about regret. I wrote this song over 10 years ago, if you can believe it. It’s a song about looking back on a relationship and not just being happy that it’s over but wishing it had never happened in the first place. At the time, I had just come out of a really brutal breakup. So, I always think of it as my ‘Eternal Sunshine’ song. Like if we could wipe our memories clean, would we do it? Would it be worth it? Would we regret it? Because,of course, the cost of getting rid of all the pain and heartache that it may have caused, we also have to sacrifice the love that at one point was beautiful enough to justify the relationship in the first place.’
What was it like to work with Leah Lewis on the song?
P: “Working with Leah was amazing. Honestly, she is probably the single most talented person I’ve ever met. She has such a unique tone and style to her vocals. And her musical instincts are always interesting and unexpected. Plus, since we were dating at the time we recorded the song, it was really a dream she and I had for a long time to collaborate on a creative project together. I’m just really excited for the day she decides she’s ready to really start sharing her own music with the world because it’s so, so good. I’m basically her number one fan, and I’ll fight anyone who says I’m not.”
We have to talk about your amazing acting career! What has been your favorite project you have worked on so far?
P: “I think my favorite project I’ve worked on is a new show that is coming out later this year on Netflix called “Griselda” starring Sofia Vergara. It’s a new drug cartel mini-series in the vein of “Narcos.” But it was really fun because it’s set in Miami in the 70s/80s, so we got to wear all these incredible costumes and shoot in these amazing locations. Plus, working with Sofia was an absolute dream. The whole cast and crew were amazing. I can’t wait for it to come out. You gotta check it out when it does.”
Would you consider doing more acting in the future?
P: “Oh, of course. I always keep my eyes and ears open for new opportunities. While music is my focus and my passion, I do have a deep love for acting and storytelling. So, hopefully, that will always be a part of my life as well. It’s always been fun for me to be doing more than just one thing. It keeps my life interesting and lets me always just kind of go with the flow and have an adventure in this brief but beautiful life we’re living.”
What is your reaction to having over 1 Million streams on your music, on just Spotify alone?
P: “Honestly, my reaction is just gratitude. I’m so thankful for every single person who has ever hit play on one of my songs. But really, I’m also hopeful. I’m hopeful that in those million-plus streams, my music made an impact. I hope that my songs influenced someone positively, or gave someone the comfort they needed, or just that it helped them feel seen or understood. My music is just as much, if not more, for them as it is for me.”
How do you think you’ve grown as an artist since your cover videos era?
P: “It’s so funny that you ask this, because I was just recently going through old videos I made and was laughing/cringing my way through them. Honestly, I was watching them and was so embarrassed by them, I thought they were horrible. But then I thought to myself that it actually makes me so proud that I hate them now. Because it means that I’ve really “leveled up” so to speak. I’m also proud of the person I was back then who was brave enough to put themselves out there. Who was willing to work hard to improve at something they loved.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
P: “Oh, you know, I’m in all the usual places; Instagram, TikTok, etc. All my stuff is @paysonlewis, and hopefully, you can follow along and enjoy the wild ride. I have so much new stuff coming out this year, and I’ve literally never been so excited to share it with you all than I am now.”
