This duo’s debut album is absolutely incredible!
With over 5 Million streams on just Spotify alone, Gabriel Everett and Ash Wallace’s Foley has made their mark in the music scene. Today, they released the first half of their debut album ‘Crowd Pleaser Pt.1’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Foley about ‘Coffee’, dream tour collaborations, and more!
When did you guys first decide that you wanted to pursue music together?
F: “We had been friends for 5 years making music in other bands and it honestly didn’t occur to us for a while that we could make music together. Ash was in the neo soul world, Gabe was in the punk world – it didnt make sense to us until we sat down and tried for the first time, just for fun, to write a pop song. From there I think the challenge of pop fascinated us and we went deeper and deeper into the world of really concise, well written, magical pop. Never looked back!”
What is the background behind your duo name ‘Foley’?
F: “We are huge over thinkers so we went back and forth on the name a million times- it ended up that we were traveling in South East Asia, and decided that whatever name was our favorite when we landed back home had to be the name. Foley was our favorite at the time! Now we like to think that foley, which usually means the sounds and overdubs in a film, means that we are soundtracking our own lives and capturing the soundscape of our 20s.”
Tell us more about the amazing first half of your debut album ‘Crowd Pleaser Pt.1’?
F: “Oh man where to start! It’s been a journey of exploring our sound for the last 2 years, and we’ve pushed ourselves to the limits of what we can create. This album is the result of all that experimentation and writing more songs than we ever have to unlock a body of work we are super proud of.”
If you had to choose your favorite track off of the upcoming EP, which would you choose and why?
F: “Coffee is probably my favorite track we’ve ever made – its such a special moment for us because when we wrote that, we really felt like we had found the sound for this album and it was our guiding star for the rest of the songs. Working on it across NZ and New York with Tim Atlas has been such a beautiful experience as well because as soon as we heard his verse it just felt perfect and all fell into place. Tim brought such a new flavour to the song, especially with his harmonies in the choruses that we just absolutely fell in love with. Honestly this song was just so much FUN and so rewarding to work on that it’s going to be hard to knock off as my favorite.”
How do you guys think you have grown as both music artists and people since your first releases to now?
F: “Absolutely! It’s been such a time of growth for us personally and creatively. We always learn a lot about ourselves in sessions because we talk so openly about what we’re feeling and experiencing.
I think just ageing as well has naturally led to more mature and confident music. As a woman in music I was quite tentative at the start to be taken advantage of in any way – and always wanted things like our appearance and brand to be on my terms. Now that I am a little older I feel far more at home in my own skin and comfortable to push the boundaries a little more- because I know who I am and what my limits are. Particularly in our visual content it’s been so amazing to push things further in terms of styling and taking risks I may not have a few years ago.”
If you headlined a tour right now and could bring any music artist of your choice to join you, who would you pick?
F: “OOOOOOOOSH. Would have to be Remi Wolf (who we just toured with ahhhhhh) or Charli XCX – because holy heck I am absolutely obsessed.”
Can you tease anything about Crowd Pleaser Pt. 2?
F: “I wish we could XOXO.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
F: “We are on all socials as @wearefoley – Spotify, Youtube, literally anywhere just come join our community!”
