An actor you need to know!
After his boxing career, Andy Gatenby is thriving as an actor. He recently starred as the character Andre in the star-studded film ‘Renegades’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Andy about being on set, his upcoming movie, and more!
Tell us more about your transition from boxing to acting?
A: “Before my journey as an actor started, I was a professional boxing prospect and unbeaten after winning six back-to-back fights. My next fight was for the English Title. But I was referred on a routine medical exam and had to retire from boxing overnight. This was a huge shock, and my life did a massive 180. I was lost after this and didn’t know what direction I wanted to go down in life. I was intrigued by acting and auditioned for a part-time drama school. I was accepted and instantly caught the acting bug. I then transitioned all of the attributes that made me excel in boxing and transferred them to my new craft. I was up early every day working away. Chipping away every single day. I attended every acting workshop I could find. Watched every video on acting, and read so many books. After four years of constant hard work, things started taking off, and I’m now a working actor in tv/film.”
Now that you are a part of the entertainment industry, do you enjoy it?
A: “Absolutely, I always say. If something is not fun, then don’t do it. I love the whole process. Being on set is such a buzz for me. It always makes me laugh when on set and actors are moaning about the production or because they’ve got to wait around for a bit. I think, just enjoy the moment. A lot of actors chase these jobs for months, or even years. And then, when they land them, they moan all day, haha. What’s the point of that. I’m always smiling on set and having a laugh. But as soon as it’s time to go to work. I switch straight to business mode and make sure I’m ready to smash my role.”
What has been your favorite acting role so far, and why?
A: “My favorite role to date was in my latest film, Renegades. It’s an international action film from Shogun films. It was a pleasure to act side by side with names like Danny Trejo, Lee Majors, Louis Mandylore, Tommy Lister Jr and many more. This was a good step up for me, and I loved the experience. You learn so much from these sorts of names that one or two days on set with them puts you forward months or years of experience. I’m always watching, always learning. Every day is a school day for me, and when I’m on set with more prominent names. I’m not just doing my own thing. Im watching everything. Soaking up as much information as I can. Learning and growing. You can catch it on VOD streaming sites now. It’s a great film.”
Are there any fellow actors who inspire you? People you would love to work with next?
A: “I’m inspired by so many. I’ve got a list as long as my arm, but I’ll give you my top 5:
1, Louis Manydlore, I worked with Louis on Renegades, but it wasn’t for long enough. I matured instantly being around him and would love to learn more from him in the future.
2, Scott Adkins, He’s smashing it and always involved in great action films. I always think, what can I learn from these actors? Well, with Scott. I’m sure he’s forgotten more about martial arts and action films than most people will ever know.
3, Billy Murray, He’s just a gentleman, an absolute gem. Being around him is infectious and makes you feel good.
4, Stephen Graham, he is one of the best British actors we’ve got. And smashes every role. I’ve never seen him in character and have not believed him. Working alongside him would mature any actor. And it would be a pleasure.
5, Nicolas Cage, he’s starred in some of my all-time favorite films, and it would be a big tick off my bucket list standing side by side with him.
Do you have any other acting projects in the works? Can you tease what we can expect?
A: “I’ve got an action film later in the year, but it’s currently under an NDA. I’ve also guaranteed myself booking two more films, as Im going on two holidays this year. Haha, I haven’t been on holiday since 2018, so I know some things will come up for those dates. As that’s the way it works, haha. This year, like every year, my goals are to keep pushing forward with personal development and trying to be a better person that I was the year before.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
A: “I’m on twitter and Instagram @gatenbygas Thank you for having me.”
