A New York artist you need to know!
Everyone get your Spotify playlists out! Today, advocate and music-artist Raegan Sealy released an amazing single ‘Make ‘Em Jealous’. And spoiler alert: it’s a bop.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Raegan about her dream collabs, upcoming music releases, and more!
What first inspired you to pursue a career in music?
R: “Simply an undying love for it. Music has always seemed like the most magical part of human existence to me. It’s the only thing that I’ve reliably been able to lean on to get through any turmoil. It’s offered me self-actualization, healing, expression, celebration and connection. It comes from a higher place of consciousness that is incredibly powerful. You feel that when you access it with other people–singing in a group, or being in a crowd at a concert. Music is an alignment with truth.”
Tell us more about your amazing single ‘Make ‘em Jealous’.
R: “Make ‘em Jealous is an upbeat, indie-soul-pop song that reframes and reclaims the rationalizations we make to remain in toxic relationships. Most of us have been there at some point. I always feel like people feel shamed for remaining with a disrespectful or harmful partner more than the partner ever feels shamed for being disrespectful or causing harm. There’s no shame in wanting to believe the best about someone, or to give people second, third, sometimes fourth chances… There should just be a little more self-care, and that starts with acknowledging the pattern. Celebrate the pattern. It means you’re not the asshole.”
If you could collab on a song with any artist, who would it be and why?
R: “It would be Kae Tempest or Alex Turner. Very different artists, both of whom I love equally. Both have a supernatural ability to tap into that truth I talked about earlier, through compelling storytelling, and being nobody but themselves.”
You are also a very well-known advocate. What are some of your favorite causes/topics to support?
R: “Access to education is a big one for me. And that’s not just to do with cost–although that’s obviously a huge issue. But there is a lot of work to be done in the realm of child development and psychology relating to trauma, and how we address that in schools and communities. Childhood trauma prevents many young people from being able to fully engage with education, and is a pipeline to all kinds of other outcomes–addiction, incarceration, even disease–later in life. It disproportionately intersects with factors like socioeconomic status and race, and our response–or lack of response–to it maintains this loop of oppression and inequality.”
How would you personally describe the music scene in Brooklyn?
R: “Anything goes. In the best way.”
Can we expect more music from you after the release of this single?
R: “Yes! I have two more singles coming out this Spring, a music video, two live videos, and more! I’ll also be back on stage! Follow my IG or sign up to my mailing list to hear about dates and releases!”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
