A new album to look out for!
With thousands of monthly listeners and a growing fanbase, Little Fuss is becoming a music group to know. The duo is gearing up to release their debut album ‘Girls At Parties’ on January 12th.
We had the amazing honor of talking to Little Fuss member Olivia Martinez about how they created their group name, how they’ve grown since their early beginnings, and more!
When did you first meet Cody and decide that you two should work together?
O: “We started writing together two days after we met! It was a lot of fun and we kind of just never stopped!”
How did you both come up with your duo name ‘Little Fuss’? What is its meaning?
O: “It first came from a lyric “you don’t ask me to make a fuss about the little things” in a song I was working on right before Cody and I met. The name Little Fuss seemed to fit our dynamic as friends and as a band. But he was actually the one who had to convince me it was a good band name! We went on an entire road trip, trying to come up with a better name and by the end he convinced me that Little Fuss was the right name for us.”
Tell us more about your recent release ‘A Modern Olympia’.
O: “A Modern Olympia” is based on a painting by Paul Cézanne. It reframes a famous painting of the goddess Venus; instead of painting her as a goddess, Cézanne depicted her as a call girl. This caused a lot of criticism and scandal. Learning about this story, I was reminded of the female experience in society as a whole. I think the figure in this series of paintings reflects the loss of innocence and level of shame the patriarchy places on women for being complex human beings instead of pure, sweet archetypes of so-called “femininity.” I feel a lot of anger but also a lot of release when singing this song live. Overall, it makes me feel really good to perform it with the band.”
Speaking of recent singles, your song ‘Guardian Angel, was added to a Billboard music list! What was your reaction to your music getting its much-deserved recognition?’
O: “It was and continues to be very exciting! I think it’s pretty exciting anytime a stranger I’ve never met listens to one of our songs and has a positive reaction – how cool! I feel really lucky that people take the time to listen.”
What is your usual songwriting process?
O: “It’s different every time! I think we tend to start with some sort of hook. It can be lyrical, melodic, a cool production sound, etc. We just like getting inspired by ideas that interest us and seeing where they lead! We have a lot of fun working together this way.”
How do you think you and ‘Little Fuss’ as a whole have grown since your debut EP a year ago?
O: “This is a great question! I think we’ve grown so so much. I love our debut EP, as it will always remind me of the time period in which we were still finding our sound. A year later I feel much more confident in defining our identity as a band. We draw from a lot of different music styles, so it took us a while to figure out our personal balance between them all. I think we’ve finally landed on something very specific and very “us” which makes me happy! I think we’ve done a lot of discovery as far as our visual aesthetic goes as well. We’ve grown the most as a live band over the past year. We’re so happy to have Vitor Oliveira playing drums with us and Delia Martin on bass. They are so talented and also really great friends.”
Can you tease anything about your upcoming album ‘Girls At Parties’?
O: ‘Girls At Parties’ is a collection of songs written from the perspectives of different girls in a variety of social circumstances. It is a continuation of our “introvert anthem” song style, with even more socially awkward narrators and internal observations about each of their surroundings. We plan to accompany it with even more visuals and videos in the next few months and are already enjoying playing the songs live!’
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
O: “We have so much planned!!! Stay tuned on our social media and you’ll be sure to get updates about our upcoming shows and releases. We may or may not already be scheming for album #2.”
