Lisset Verde is the founder of the successful apparel and accessory brand Wuitusu. With two different locations already and positive reviews from customers, this amazing company will no doubt expand to bigger and better things as each day goes by.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Lisset about giving back, her reaction to the positive reviews, and more!
What first inspired you to create your amazing brand Wuitusu, back in 2019?
L: “When I was a child, I happened to read a book about the Wayuu and their matrilineal culture. As a young girl just beginning to observe the outside world, the power of the women in this society attracted my attention and I wanted to learn more about them. Later on, I owned few Wayuu items, and I realized that they could be promoted to reach out to a larger population. But the price was an issue. The providers were mostly small online sellers, and their prices were very high. I thought that Wuitusu could solve this
problem.”
You opened both of your physical stores within the same year. What encouraged you to open a second store in such a short time?
L: “We are selling handmade products that are unique. Our product offer provides a unique satisfaction to our customer. When we open our first store in Santa Monica, we received a very positive response from our customers. It was very encouraging for us and inspired us to open our second store in Ovation Center within six months.”
Both of your locations have incredible reviews online! What has been your reaction to your business being so successful?
L: “Thankfulness! I am so thankful because Wuitusu allows our Wayuu partners to make a living working the ancestral arts of their people. They are so proud their offerings are loved by so many people around the world! We love our customers. Our products are unique and one of a kind, and our customers also receive a individualized and special attention.”
If you had to only choose from the products that you offer on your online website, what are some of your favorite Wuitusu products?
L: “One of the products I love the most is the traditional crossbodies. They come in small, medium, and large and in myriad of colors and patterns. I tell our customers that there are always one or two crossbodies that will call to them. Besides their beauty, the crossbodies are super-comfortable, and their colors and patterns have meaning! They are truly works of art.
Another product I love are our jackets, because they are my babies: the Wayuu people do not make anything for cold weather, because they live in a desert. I decided to place their art in denim jackets, and people love them!! We have two main motifs: the evil eye and the Wayuu mandala, and I love them both.”
You also are a philanthropist, made clear by your work with Helping Children in Venezuela, and The Wayuu Taya Foundation. What inspired you to donate a portion of your proceeds towards charity?
L: “What inspired me was knowing that I cannot partner with every Wayuu artisan to guarantee their income and knowing that other members of the Wayuu tribe are going through tough times. Also, I believe that every company, no matter how small, can do good in this world by aligning themselves to a cause close to their heart, and for Wuitusu, that cause is the indigenous children who need to grow strong and proud to continue their ancestor’s traditions.”
What are some of your biggest goals for the brand?
L: “Ultimately, Wuitusu is a slow fashion brand that supports hand made accessories and clothes. We would like to promote the handmade artisanship of various techniques specifically crochet making and needle punching. We would like to be available for our customers through brick-and-mortar stores as well as through our online store. We would like to be one of the prominent gift options providing our customers a personal feeling and a unique experience.”
