This singer-songwriter is so talented!
Pop-artist Jeffrey James is always a favorite on our playlists . And now, ahead of his upcoming EP, he’s back with a brand new single today entitled ‘Beautiful Ones.’
We had the amazing honor of talking with Jeffrey about his songwriting process, dream collab, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in the music industry?
J: “I kind of always knew I wanted to do something in or around the music industry. I started writing songs when I was in high school and then went to college in Nashville which was pretty focused on the music industry. After my first year of college, I knew music was the only thing I wanted to do.”
Tell us about your amazing new single ‘Beautiful Ones’. What is its meaning?
J: “Beautiful Ones” is about feeling your most confident while being surrounded by your best friends on a perfect day. It’s about those moments where everything feels right in the world. That can be a fleeting feeling so I wanted to bottle it up in a song so I could take it with me wherever I went.”
What is your songwriting process usually like? Does it differ when writing for other artists?
J: “It definitely changes song by song. Sometimes someone will come into a session with a clear idea or a song title in mind. Other times we’ll start with a track that inspires us. However, I personally tend to lean on melodies above anything else. I’m usually humming a hook before I know what I want to say lyrically. Then, I’ll figure out what that melody wants to say.”
You are based in Tennessee. How would you personally describe Nashville’s music scene?
J: “Nashville’s music scene is 10 times more musically diverse than most people realized. There is obviously a lot of country and Americana music being made here, but the pop and rock scenes are also extremely strong. No matter the genre, the craft of songwriting is held to the highest standard in Nashville. It can be intimidating at times because there are so many talented musicians and songwriters packed into a relatively small city. But it’s also a great motivator to keep getting better at your craft.”
If you could collab with one artist of your choice next year, who would it be and why?
J: “I’d love to collaborate with Labritnth. I feel like he’s not constrained by genre; everything he releases sounds fresh and unique. I want to be a part of that!”
You have received over 5 million cumulative streams on just Spotify alone. Has your rising music fame hit you yet?
J: “Not really. I’m always surrounded by artists who I think are more successful than me so I’m always being humbled and looking for what I can do next.”
Can you tease what we may see in your upcoming EP in 2023?
J: “I wanted to make a fun EP that was much more uptempo than I’ve let myself do in the past. I also leaned into some 90’s British alt pop/rock influences that I’ve been loving lately. The EP has a lot of feel good tracks that make you wanna move!”
