This Fall issue’s very own spotlight artist!
With the release of her recent album ‘PNXK’, singer-songwriter Nyxen has continued to show that she is a perfect addition to the music industry. You may also recognize her for being our recent spotlight artist in our star-studded Fall 2022 magazine issue.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Nyxen again about how she’s grown as an artist, the process behind her debut album, and more!
Tell us about your amazing debut album ‘PXNK’?
N: “The idea to write an album sparked a few years ago, I had been tinkering around with sounds on my Prophet synth that felt like they were from a Cyberpunk soundtrack and I wanted to explore that idea and create a world for those songs to live in. I wrote the word Cyberpunk on a whiteboard followed by Radio Silence, Fantasies, Synthetic, Tunnels and a few others. My way of sparking that imagery for the world I was picturing. I ended up writing the music to the name, pulling inspiration from the words and creating a world to match.
It’s actually pretty crazy thinking back to where it started now that it’s complete, I can’t wait for listeners to escape into the sonic world I’ve made!”
If you had to choose between all 11 tracks, which song on the album is your favorite and why?
N: “It’s so hard to choose a favourite song, at a point in time they’ve all been my favourites. At the moment I’d say Synthetic is my favourite because I love playing it live and it’s still hidden away waiting to be released along with the album.”
How did you come up with your stage name ‘Nyxen’?
N: “I had been DJing under various names for a few years and decided I needed to come up with something that I would stick with. My best friend and I spent a day brainstorming potential names, making sure no one else was performing under them already (surprisingly difficult). I think we had a shortlist of letters that I liked and we formed Nyxen out of that.”
How do you think you’ve grown as an artist from your debut in 2015 to now?
N: “I’ve grown significantly since my debut. I feel like I’m more confident as an artist now, the sounds I explore have shifted dramatically. It’s been a huge journey and I feel like I’ve lost and found myself many times over the years.”
What would you say is your biggest music career goal and why?
N: “The biggest career goal for me is to stay inspired and make music as long as possible. I feel like all the other goals I set myself are stepping stones to that overall dream to release music and perform live for many years into the future.”
