We are absolutely obsessed!
Singer-songwriter Hamid J has quickly become recognized in the music scene for his relatable lyrics and trule incredible voice. Ahead of his debut album ‘cycle of a relationship’, which releases September 15th, the queer artist is back with a brand new single entitled ‘aint thinkin bout you’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Hamid about his best coming out advice, his growth as an artist, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue music?
H: “The very first time I felt a visceral reaction and connection to singing was in the first grade in my small, private German Catholic school’s church choir. Buuut, it took years for me to find the courage to actually pursue it full-time as a career. It wasn’t until November 2020 when I released “3Way Call” and that’s when I really started making music a huge priority in my life.”
Tell us about your amazing new single ‘ain’t thinkin bout you’.
H: “First, thank you for highlighting the track — that means the world to me. The song is really dedicated to our lingering exes who don’t appreciate or recognize our value until it’s way too late. You know, for me, it takes a long time to process and really get over someone I really loved. The last thing that I need at that point is for that person trying to make their way back into my life. And of course there is part of you that romanticizes the past, and what could have been and that maybe you should get back together, but then you realize what your ex made you go through. So, this song is about that moment when you go about your day and you realize you are no longer thinking about your ex. You have actually moved on. Like to the point that if he came back and asked you to get back together, you would just say “nah, I’m good. BYEEE.” But like without the resentment, of course. It’s a celebration that you no longer need them, want them, and that you are more than fine without that person in your life.”
Since the start of your career to now, how do you think you’ve grown as an artist?
H: “Oh my lord! A lot. I think I have grown as a songwriter: trying to tell more specific stories, being more authentic to me, and being ok with being vulnerable. I’m no longer chasing a specific formula, but putting out music that I really love listening to. As a producer, I’ve come a long way. I now understand what key a song is in, chord structures, creating beats from scratch and enjoying all parts of making music.”
As a singer I continue to grow. I have an amazing voice teacher – Charlotte Martin – who is helping me find my sound, expand my range, and sing healthily.”
How important do you think LGBTQ+ representation is in the music industry?
H: “I mean, to me, it’s hugely important. Seeing artists like George Michael and Elton John rise to the highest level of the industry has given me permission to truly be myself, all parts of me, and not to be ashamed — really lean into it more. Again, it all goes back to being authentic and true to yourself.”
Do you have any coming-out and general advice for your fans?
H: “Coming out is a very personal experience and to me it was important that I do it on my own terms and my own timeline. Even the realization and processing it myself took some time, so my advice is:
- Do it on your own timeline
- Show grace to yourself
- Lean on friends for support (or on music or faith)
- Be patient with your family/parents — they might not tell you this but I believe deep in my heart that “most” parents do love their children and may need some time processing things themselves
- At the end of the day, you need to be YOU. Whatever that means. Whatever societal norms we have to change. But you need to be yourself. You are entirely enough. And most importantly, you are NOT alone.
What has been your reaction to receiving over 200K+ streams on just Spotify alone?
H: “It’s unreal in a way. Like my goal is to find a community of fans who connect with my music and like hearing my songs and stories but it’s surreal. I am so grateful!”
You are gearing up to release your debut album. Can you tease what we might see?
H: “My debut album, which comes out September 15th is titled cycle of a relationship and each track takes the listener through the dating/love/relationship journey. From not even looking for love, to meeting someone amazing and falling into the infatuation stage, when things get more serious. Then of course, the break up, heartache, anger, revenge, self-reflection and then moving on. The album really takes you through each chapter.
Matt Cady helped co-produce it and he is a genius. Donny Ingram did a masterful job in the mixing and mastering of the songs. And, of course, Charlotte helped out to make sure vocal production was on point. I did not shy away from certain topics or feelings, being vulnerable or maybe even a bit sassy.”
