A new bop!
Following her past singles ‘Too Late’ and ‘Outsider’, singer-songwriter XOHA is making her way to the front of the music scene. And today, she’s back with a brand new single ‘Heartless’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with XOHA on the challenges she’s faced, favorite book, and more!
How did you get started with music?
X: “I’ve always been drawn to arts and began singing at 5 years old. From there, I found myself jumping at the opportunity to audition for musical theater shows and other musical endeavors.”
Do you play any instruments?
X: “Yes! For many years I’ve been accompanying myself on the guitar and piano, jumping between both during the songwriting process.”
Who is your biggest motivation?
X: “Although I have many different motivations, my favorite artists will always be my biggest inspirations. This ranges from Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, and Lauryn Hill, to The Weeknd, Kali Uchis, Doja Cat, etc.”
What inspired you to write “Heartless?”
X: “My inspiration for heartless was sparked up during a period of self-reflection that I went through, when I realized how one-sided and unhealthy many of the relationships in my life were. I’d find myself apologizing when the other person was in the wrong and being easily manipulated. However, I was reluctant to cut these bonds out of fear, loneliness, attachment, or lost love. This song is powered by the breakthrough when you finally get the courage to cut these toxic bonds and move on with your life, stronger than you were before.”
Do you have any new projects in store?
X: “Yes! I’ve got a few dreamy, contemporary, but upbeat tunes on the way inspired by Kali Uchis, The Weeknd, Dua Lips, and Sade. Following that, I’ve begun dabbling in a few different realms with songs that resemble those of Ava Max, Ella Mai, and Olivia Rodrigo.”
What is a dream you would like to fulfill?
X: “My ultimate dream for the future is to sell out a full stadium. In the nearer future, my goal is to establish myself as an artist and connect with other talented musicians in the industry.”
Who are some artists you would like to collaborate with?
X: “I think my style would work well with artists such as Between Friends, Steve Lacy, and Doja Cat.”
What is your favorite book?
X: “One of my favorite books is On The Come Up by Angie Thomas. I think it beautifully addressed institutional and societal issues while engaging the reader through a world of musicality.”
What are some successes and challenges you have faced in your musical journey?
X: “Many challenges in the present are centered around media, engagement, and promotions. As we live in a digital age, it’s difficult to get your stuff out there in such a whirlwind of music. On the positive side, lockdown, as well as summer break, have given me time to perfect my craft and write, write, write! Being a songwriter, I too struggle with writer’s block. However, summer grants the freedom of instant inspiration as well as creative efficiency.”
How has music molded and shaped you into the person you are today?
X: “I wouldn’t be who I am without my music. It’s my outlet, a place where I can scribble down my emotions and bend them into lyrics, add a melody and chords, and touch my audience when they need it most. Plus, you will never catch me without headphones. Whether I’m humming a tune on a walk or blasting my favorite song on my home speaker, music will always surround me everywhere I go.”
