This actor is in everything!
This actor and voice-actor has quickly become a name to know in the voice-acting industry, especially after his title role in the popular cartoon series ‘Dive Olly Dive’. He currently stars in the title role as ‘Valentino’ in the Cartoon Network hit show ‘Victor + Valentino’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Sean-Ryan about voice actors he’d love to work with, advice to aspiring actors, and more!
Why did you begin voice acting?
S: “I love animation as an avenue for storytelling and ever since I was a child was fascinated by the potential to create worlds that could only exist in my imagination. Of course this is my refined thinking now, while the child me simply thought it was “cool” and how much I wanted to be able duel like they did in Yu-Gi-Oh or go on an adventure as a DigiDestined. So when I was 8 I began my journey to try and become a part of that storytelling by learning the art of voice over. The rest is history.”
How has your acting journey been so far?
S: “It has been a long, but extremely enjoyable 14 years in this industry. I have worked on some truly incredible projects that would send 8-year old me over the moon. I am a lead on a Cartoon Network show, Victor and Valentino, where I watched a lot of my cartoons growing up. I work as Chadley on the Final Fantasy 7 remake which is made by Square Enix who also made one of my favorite games Kingdom Hearts. I’ve met and worked with some kind and talented people who either voiced my childhood or offered helpful guidance. It is a career I love and hope to continue in for a long time.”
Who is an actor/actress that you would like to work with?
S: “I’m asked this question more than one might imagine and my default answer usually goes to the extraordinarily talented and versatile Matt Mercer. I still want to work with him, but it has expanded to Johnny Yong Bosch since I loved his work in the Persona 4 animation dub.”
Do you have any new projects in store?
S: “I am currently working on a video game project and have recently wrapped recording on another video game project. I can’t divulge details on either of them but they are both amazing games I have played in the past and are games I recommend keeping an eye out for when they release.”
What is some advice you would like to give to aspiring actors/actresses?
S: “As cheesy as it may come off to say it is essential for all actors and actresses to never give up in the face of rejection. There are a million factors that go into casting any given project. The best thing you can do is give casting a read that shows them exactly what they will get when they cast you. You leave it all on the table and move onto the next audition because eventually you will come across that perfect project that you are the best fit for.”
What has been your biggest struggle during your acting career?
S: “Funnily enough the biggest struggle for me was following my own advice. There were a couple moments where there was a long dry spell and I doubted my own abilities. Those days are long behind me and now I follow my own advice by leaving it all on the table for every audition.”
What is your favorite movie?
S: “I’ve got two movies that I’ve watched in the high double digits. First is Demon Slayer Mugen Train which is my all time favorite piece of media I’ve ever seen. It made me laugh, scream in excitement, and the end sped-run me through the six stages of grief. It has some of the best animation I’ve ever had the pleasure to witness and the score was incredibly emotional and complimented every scene. My second favorite film is more of a guilty pleasure and that is the second Mummy film. The reasoning is simply Brendan Fraser is a national treasure.”
What do you like to do in your free time?
S: “I enjoy watching anime, currently my favorite show I’ve been keeping up with is Spy x Family because it is absurdly adorable and the opening and ending songs are stuck in my head. When I’m not doing that I play a lot of video games and to answer what I play, anything on every console under the sun. These days I’m playing a lot of Guilty Gear Strive. On the weekends I also have some Dungeons and Dragons campaigns I play in. Currently running my personal favorite character Edward Dantes a lvl. 11 Necromancer.”
If there is something you could tell your younger self what would it be?
S: “When I was younger is when I struggled with my dry spells so I would definitely tell him to never give up, deliver your best reads always, and to keep pushing onward. Also that making eye contact with casting directors is really not as hard as we made it out to be.”
What is a milestone you would like to accomplish?
S: “I’ve actually completed quite a few of my dreams since entering the VO industry. Being in a video game was completed with Final Fantasy 7 because I got to play the sweet adorable quest giver Chadley. I got to work for Cartoon Network as the booksmart smug Valentino. Moving forward I would really like to play the lead protagonist or better yet antagonist in a video game preferably a JRPG.”
