This young actor just made his Disney debut!
Australian actor Jayden McGinlay is officially a part of the Disney Channel family. He recently made headlines after starring as ‘Teddy’ in the Disney movie ‘The Curious Case of Dolphin Bay”.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Jayden about his acting journey so far, his favorite Disney show, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in acting?
J: “From as early as I can remember, acting was a part of me. I’ve always loved performing, creating characters, telling stories, and entertaining people. Since about 3 years old, I was always dressing up in costumes and re-enacting scenes from films in all different accents, so my mum enrolled me in a local theatre school when I was 6 and I thrived there. After my first performance in a stage production, I knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was cast a couple of lead roles in community theatre productions then at 8 years old I landed my first professional role on stage, Jeremy Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. After that, I did some short films, then I got an agent when I was 9 and started to get professional screen acting work.”
Tell us about your amazing new role as ‘Teddy’ in ‘The Curious Case of Dolphin Bay.’
J: “Teddy is one of the lead roles in the film. He’s on a mission to gain internet fame through his YouTube channel and to find buried treasure. He is one of four teenagers participating in a marine biology summer internship in Australia, and he convinces Quinn (played by Izabela Rose) to join him on his adventure. Teddy is a lot of fun—he’s very enthusiastic and he’s funny even though he usually doesn’t mean to be.“
Do you think you have anything in common with your character?
J: “We are similar in lots of ways. When I first read the script, I was like, ‘This is basically me!’ So, playing him was so much fun as I could really relate to him and put a lot of myself into him. He is optimistic, determined and, driven like me. He has a good sense of humour, usually doesn’t take things too seriously, and he loves to dance!”
You started your career on the stage. Which did you prefer: performing on stage, or filming?
J: “I love them equally for different reasons, although I am focusing on screen acting now as a career. My work on stage has been so valuable and shaped who I am as an actor as well as a person. The stage has taught me so much and helped me grow in so many ways professionally and personally. I’m grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given and for where they have led me. The technical demands of screen acting are different from those of stage acting but it’s essentially the same thing—you’re living truthfully in imaginary circumstances. So, I love them both for the same reasons, as well as for different reasons!”
Since you are officially a part of the ‘Disney Channel’ family, if you had to choose, what is your favorite Disney show and why?
J: “I think my favorite Disney show is The Secrets of Sulphur Springs that stars our awesome Izabela Rose from The Curious Case of Dolphin Bay! I think the story is really interesting and I like how they explore the horror in a light-hearted, fun way.”
If you could star alongside any actor, who would it be and why?
J: “I’d absolutely love to work alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. He’s an incredible actor and a huge inspiration to me. I’m a huge fan of his work.”
When not starring on our screens, what are some of your favorite things to do?
J: “I really love making my own music, being out in nature, going hiking, bike riding, going to the beach, hanging out with friends, and playing with my dogs.”
Where can we follow your amazing new journey?
