Their stardom has only just started!
Made up of Adam Gee and Brooks Hoffman, SixForty1 is already tearing up the country-pop scene. They’ve received over 10 Million streams on just Spotify alone, their popular hits being ‘All Night’ and ‘Somebody’s Gonna’. Now, they’re back with their EP “Started Right Here”.
We had the amazing honor of talking with SixForty1 about favorite songs off of the EP, fun times on tour, and more!
You guys recently came out with an EP called “Started Right Here” what made you guys want to write the EP?
“We were initially inspired by a new sound we wanted to chase down. Bring more energy instrumentally and lyrically to our sound and shows. We got into a groove writing and everything started to click. Once we had the songs chosen we realized that if we put them in the order we have them, the listener is taken through each stage of a relationship; from meeting someone new, to falling in love, to breaking up and realizing everything happens for a reason.”
Do you guys have a favorite song that you wrote on the EP?
Brooks: “I got back and forth between “Started Right Here” and “Me and Your Memory.”
Austin: “I love the melody of “Never Gets Old” and the message it relays to our fans to never forget to tell the one you love you love them. Life’s too short.”
You just wrapped up the Two Thousand (more) Miles Tour with Tyler Rich. What was that experience like going on tour with him?
“It was incredible and was the first official tour we’ve ever been a part of. We are so grateful that Tyler and his team were willing to take us out on the road with them. We learned a lot and made some great friends. Hope we get to play more shows together in the future!”
What kind of drew you guys to start a band?
“We knew that each other could sing and just by doing open mic nights in Murray, Kentucky where we went to college. It wasn’t until we did a talent show in town that we decided we should get together to write and see how it goes. Once we wrote a few songs we decided to go for it and start a duo.”
You have also toured alongside Brantley Gilbert, Eli Young Band, Michael Ray, Walker Hayes, Niko Moon and more. Do you have a tour that stuck out to you the most?
“The memory that always sticks out in our heads is whenever we were headed back to Nashville from Savannah, Georgia opening for Micheal Ray at Saddlebags. Our drummer was driving Austin’s mom’s Tahoe because it was all we could afford and it had to have been 2am at this point. We ended up running out of gas just outside of Atlanta and the only way we could get to a gas station was to hitch a ride with a police officer to the nearest gas station. Our drummer volunteered to ride along. Micheal and his team’s buses driving past us mid-crisis had to have been the icing on the cake. Fun times to say the least.”
What kind of inspires you to write your songs?
“It truly does come from somewhere different every time we go into a writing session. That’s what keeps us striving to dive deeper into the stories we tell. Most of the time it comes from combining our past life experiences together to make something special and unique.”
Do you have anyone that you look up to as a Singer/Songwriter?
Austin: “I’ve always been a big fan of Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts. He’s had a heavy influence on me as a singer and artist.”
Brooks: “I began writing because of the alternative rock/punk scene. Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low was a big inspiration. Ed Sheeran and Sam Hunt were big influences for me as well.”
When you are writing a song do you focus on the lyrics first or the music?
“We’ve always gravitated more towards the melody side of the songwriting process. Here recently we’ve been into feeling out tracks at the start of the write, humming melodies until everyone in the room agrees which work the best, then writing lyrics to those melodies. It’s more of a pop approach to songwriting but we wanted to try it out to see if we can utilize it. It’s been a lot of fun so far. If that way isn’t working out that day then we go to our song titles/ideas and start from scratch.”
