Band Eighty Ninety On Group Name And Favorite Songs On New EP “The Night Sky”

Their new project is next-level!

Made up of brothers Abner and Harper, ‘Eighty Ninety’ is quickly becoming one of our favorite indie-pop groups. They have already received millions of streams on their music, their most popular hit so far being ‘Three Thirty’ and ‘Your Favorite Song’. Today, they just released their incredible EP “The Night Sky”.

We had the amazing honor of talking with the band about their songwriting process, advice, and more!

When did you two first realize that you wanted to create music together?

“We’re brothers, so it’s something that we’ve been thinking about for a long time. In high school there was a sense that someday we would collaborate. At the time we were too busy being in bands with our friends, haha.”

How did you guys come up with your name ‘Eighty Ninety’?

We wanted something that didn’t have any pre-existing meanings so that we could really define it with our music. People guess all the time – we’ve heard speed limits, decades, radio stations, highways, eras of music. We like them all.”

Tell us about your amazing EP “The Night Sky”.

Thank you so much! We’ve been working on this for the better part of a year and a half and it feels really good to be putting it out. When we were working on these songs, we realized that they were all connected by the same theme: that feeling that some things in life are meant to be, and how our choices align – or sometimes don’t – with that inner voice. We chose the name the night sky because we felt like that is a perfect metaphor for the push-pull between destiny and choice. Some people look up at the night sky and see their future written in the stars – others see the infinite possibilities of the universe.”

If you could choose, what are your favorite songs off of the EP and why?

That’s really hard! We will say that we’re really excited for people to hear the unreleased ones. We feel like “The Night Sky” is quintessential Eighty Ninety, and “Walking You Home” and “Thinking of You” are a bit more experimental. We felt like the longer format of an EP (rather than singles) gave us the space to explore and expand where we could go.”

What is your songwriting process like?

It’s different all the time! In the past our songs have been written more traditionally – on a piano or an acoustic guitar first, then brought into the studio. But on this EP there are a few that happened as we were producing them, and were inspired by moments in the studio.”

How do you think you guys have grown since your debut in 2016?

We feel like the central thing that connects our songs is how we try to translate very personal feelings and small moments into cinematic, widescreen songs that match the intensity of the emotional experiences they’re drawn from. Though that hasn’t changed, we’ve since expanded our sonic approach and drawn on new instruments, tools, production techniques and collaborators to help go deeper into the songs.”

If you guys could collab with any artist, who would it be?

“It’s gotta be Taylor Swift! She’s the greatest.”

What has been your reaction to receiving over 30 Million streams on your music so far?

That is completely incomprehensible to us — we’re genuinely overwhelmed with gratitude. Connection is the purpose of music — and knowing that we’re reaching so many people just makes us want to keep going that much more.”

What advice can you give to young artists who want to pursue a music career?

Make sure it stays fun — that’s the best indicator that it’s going well.”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?
