This LA-based singer is back!
You may recognize Louis Knight from his incredible runs on the iconic TV show ‘American Idol’. Over 1 Million streams later, the singer-songwriter is back with an amazing new single ‘Maya’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Louis about his songwriting process, performing on stage, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music? Did you grow up in a musical family?
L: “I’ve always known that this is what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until I first started writing music, however, that I realized “woah, this is the best feeling in the world and I’m actually decent at it”. My dad used to be in a band in London called “The Conga Brothers”. He always used to put instruments in front of us when we were kids to see if we would gravitate towards any of them.”
How different do you think the musical scenes are in where you have lived- UK vs. Philly vs. LA?
L: “I’m not too sure about how it is in the UK. I know there’s a big scene there and I’m really looking forward to getting into it at some point! As for the difference between Philly and LA, Philly has so much music to offer and has such loyal fan-based venues. In my experience, the music tends to be mostly indie rock and rap. In LA, there’s a lot more people like me who are pursuing a career as pop singer-songwriters. Everyone here is trying to write together which has been so inspiring!”
Tell us about your amazing new single “Maya”.
L: “I wrote “Maya” about falling in love in Maastricht, a town in the Netherlands. It’s about wanting to stay in that moment forever and jumping into the unknown with someone.”
What is your songwriting process generally like?
L: “It generally starts with me sitting at a piano or playing the guitar. I find a melody or chord progression that inspires me, and I just start singing until I find what I’m trying to say. There can be hours of banging my head against the piano coming up with nothing, but it makes it all worth it for that moment when inspiration sparks and I end up with a song like “Maya” or “Change”.”
You gained a lot of attention from your appearances on American Idol- Did you enjoy your experience on the show?
L: “Yeah, I really enjoyed it! There were a lot of ups and downs. You’ll be experiencing your highest highs ever and then the stress and anxiety can bring you right back down. My experience was full of so much growth both as a person and as an artist. It’s practically like a bootcamp for the music industry.”
How do you think you have personally and musically grown since that experience?
L: “It shaped me without a doubt. I’ve enhanced my performing skills. I feel so much more confident on a stage now. I’ve also learned that I can get through anything in life. There were so many moments of self doubt during the show. I didn’t know if I could go on due to anxiety, but with the support I got from my family and the show, I persevered. I think those are our most defining moments.”
What has been your reaction to receiving over 1 Million streams on your music and your growing fanbase?
L: “I’m so grateful that people are listening and that my music is resonating with them. I’m so excited to continue to grow and play for everyone on tour!”
If you could have your dream collaboration, who would you love to do a song with?
L: “I think it would be either Jon Bellion or Chris Martin!”
Do you have any advice for young musicians wanting to pursue music, especially in the middle of this still looming pandemic?
L: “My advice would be to keep honing in on your craft and try to showcase your stuff in a way that might not have been done before on social media. There are going to be times where you’ll doubt yourself, but it’s the perseverance in those moments that will lead you along the way to success.”
Can you give us any hints on your upcoming EP?
L: “It’s 6 tracks total. It’s the most authentic to me that my music has ever been. I’m just so excited for you all to hear it.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
L: “You can follow me on Instagram @louisknight and on TikTok @louisknightofficial.”
