The new song we needed!
With over 50K streams on just Spotify alone, artist Jake White has proven that him and his incredible voice are here to stay. Now, he’s back with his brand-new and third single entitled “Brightside”.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Jake about his songwriting process, favorite hobbies, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
J: “When I was cast as Pippin In my junior year of high school. At that point I was very involved in the choral program at my school and was in our a capella group as well. My love for musical theater grew tenfold that year as I got to be a lead for the first time. After that I knew I wanted to sing and perform.”
Tell us about your amazing new single “Brightside.”
J: “Brightside” is a pop song with an upbeat and playful vibe about seeking love when you’re in the right head-space to embrace a healthy relationship.”
What is your songwriting process usually like?
J: “It changes every time. Sometimes it starts with the beat, sometimes with a melody. Sometimes with a word. Or a sentence. It really can stem from finding a single thing that works. My newest single, “Brightside,” started with a chord progression that I had wanted to use for a while. It has the minor iv chord, if you know what that means! And I looped that chord progression, and then I sang over it and used the lyrics as therapy. I was recovering from a tough breakup at the time and had been waking up crying most mornings for weeks when I finally decided to really process that pain in a beautiful way through songwriting.”
What is one thing about you that most of us probably don’t know?
J: “I am super outdoorsy and adventurous! I’m into hiking in state and national parks. I love bouldering and exploring the caves in Tennessee. I feel like a kid in a playground crawling around through caves. This is really making me consider looking into tiny home life so that I can be closer to the parks and mountains, especially since I can write and record music from anywhere!”
What has been your reaction to receiving thousands of streams on this music?
J: “It was really shocking and exciting. I had lots of people reach out and tell me how my music made them feel, which was amazing to hear. Also, it has been fun to be able to open up the Spotify for Artists app and see how many people are listening at any given moment. To know how many people are listening in real time leaves me awestruck.”
If you could collab with a song with any artist, who would it be and why?
J: “I would want to collab with Lil Nas X because I think he truly is doing so much for so many people. He has an incredible sound and a hilarious social media presence. He started so many important conversations regarding LGBTQ+ issues, as well as donated so much money to the bail project. He really is my musical hero in a lot of ways, and it’s crazy because he’s so new, but I’ve never admired another artist’s work as much as his. I could only dream of making a music video of his caliber. I love the way he expresses himself. Spoiler alert, I wear blue eyeshadow in my “Brightside” video, and I hope to experiment with different looks even more in future music videos!”
Can we expect more music from you in the future?
J: “For sure. I will be collabing with a local artist this summer and filming a music video for that as well. And I will be potentially releasing an EP in the fall with more new music!“
