This is definitely not the first time you’ve heard of him!
With thousands of streams on his music, Canadian singer-songwriter Scotty Berg has consistently been appearing on our playlists. He recently released his newest single “You Don’t Have To Be Alone”, to thousands of supporters.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Scotty on his songwriting process, favorite artist, and more!
What first inspired you to pursue a career in music?
S: “Well, my mom and dad say that before I could even talk, I would be humming, and then as soon as I could talk, I would be singing. I started taking formal lessons around 9 and am still taking them. I also play piano and guitar. I think it was just putting myself in situations where I could perform. Each time I would gain more confidence and that has really helped me stay positive and want to pursue a career in music.”
Tell us about your new single “You Don’t Have To Be Alone”.
S: “Thanks for the question…I love this song and the meaning behind it. This was co-written and was inspired by the anti-bullying and suicide prevention movements in junior high and high school. The hope is that after you listen to it, go away with a sense of hope and inspiration and know there are people that are always there to lend a hand and depend on during the tough times.”
What is your songwriting process usually like?
S: “I just start writing stuff down that comes to me. It might be an event or something going on in the world and I just start writing it out. When I was in Nashville, I co-wrote three songs and it was super cool. At the start, the guys I wrote with asked what I liked to do at home and I was like “hang out with friends, shoot hoops and stuff” and they were like perfect…boom the song Friends was co-written that day. It was awesome.”
What has been your reaction to receiving over 300K streams on your music?
S: “AMAZING! Sometimes I have a hard time believing it but the positive feedback I receive about my music is just awesome and I guess it shows in how many streams I have been getting. Honestly, it’s pretty cool and I am thankful.”
If you could collab with any artist, who would it be and why?
S: “Right now, probably Ed Sheeran. I have seen him in concert and the guy is amazingly talented and I really like his songs. I perform some of them during my shows.”
What is your favorite part of performing live?
S: “Seeing the positive reactions people have when I play. For example, I just played a gig the other day in a pub and I performed “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. A couple got up and danced and came to me after and said it was their wedding song. I LOVE to see things like that…it is why I perform!”
When not performing and creating new music, what do you enjoy doing?
S: “I hang out with my family a lot and we ski in the winters and we go out on our boat in the summers. I also love cooking so making dinners or baking stuff.”
What are some of your biggest goals for your music career?
- Get signed to a major record label
- Have songs on the Billboard charts that make a difference to people
- Tour around the world and perform on some of the largest stages
Can we expect more music from you in the future?
S: “Absolutely! Working on new stuff right now.”
