We had the absolute honor to talk with Cate on her new single, confidence, and more!
Q: What inspired you to release the song “Can’t Wait to be Pretty”?
C: “I didn’t actually plan to release “Can’t Wait To Be Pretty” after me and my friend Rory wrote it! We wrote it after a long day of walking around London together, and we always found coming back to the same topic – that we’d do the things we wanted to do after we went to the gym, or I put on some makeup and so when we got back to my apartment, we wrote the song to say that all of that doesn’t matter. At the time we only wrote it for us, but I uploaded a short clip to TikTok and I was shocked at how many people related to it, so it was kind of out of my hands. I produced the demo in my room in Camden and released it the next month.”
Q: If you had a fan who was struggling with feeling pretty, what would you say?
C: “I think confidence is never linear, most people have days where they wish that they looked like someone else. For me, what helped was picturing if my friends ever felt like that, you’d never treat your friends how you treat yourself. I’d also say a lot of why I felt insecure in high school is what I was following online – looking at ALL different types of bodies and faces, not just the beauty standard will make you appreciate how different and cool yours truly is !!”
Q: When did you decide that entering into the music industry was a good idea?
C: “I think in a way there wasn’t a moment – I just knew I couldn’t do anything else so after high school, I was touring in a band until I started putting out my own music and then it all took over!”
Q: What helped you decide that you wanted to be in the music industry?
C: “I grew up listening to country music, and I always knew I wanted to write songs like Dolly Parton. I was obsessed with Taylor Swift and Kacey Musgraves and couldn’t picture myself doing anything else but writing songs. Before all of that, I watched Hannah Montana for hours each day, so Miley Cyrus takes most of the credit as well.”
Q: What would you say to someone struggling with self-love?
C: “I think it just takes time – coming from someone who still hasn’t figured it out. I think doing what you really love to do makes it easier and surrounding yourself with people who make you feel really really good helps.”
Q: Do you have a music rolemodel? If so, who?
C: “I would have to say Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, and Kacey Musgraves. They’re my idols because they’re just so unapologetically themselves – and they’re songs show it. They also have all had different and long-lasting careers. I just hope I can make an album one day that’s even a small bit close to how inspiring their music is.”
Q: If you could write about anything with no writer’s block, or fear of backlash, what would you write about?
C: “That’s a really good question. I haven’t written any really happy love songs yet. I always get writer’s block when I try to write about good things, so potentially, that would be a good one!!”
Q: Do you have a favorite thing to do while you write? Or something that inspires you to write?
C: “I love starting ideas on guitar in my room by myself OR going on a really long walk with one of my co writers and venting. Always does the trick.”
Q: Do you have a favorite song you’ve ever written?
C: “Yes – it’s just not out yet. It’s called “Maybe” and it crushes me and I can’t wait for people to hear it!!”
