This Netflix star is joining our New Scene family!
Andrea Cortes is known for her breakout role in Netflix’s hit show “On My Block”. She has also starred in our favorite cop tv shows, including “Chicago Med” and “S.W.A.T”.
We had the absolute honor of talking with Andrea on Julio Macias, and more!
Q: What made you pursue a career in acting and was it always something you wanted to do?
A: “I have always wanted to pursue a career in acting and entertainment. I sing as well. I was inspired as a kid watching my mom perform – she has a beautiful voice and is a great actress as well. I was so mesmerized by the way her performing on stage affected people and I fell in love with it. I started singing when I was five and by the time I was seven I knew I wanted to sing and act and that has never changed.”
Q: On My Block just returned for its final season. What was it like being a part of one of the most popular shows on Netflix?
A: “It was such a blast being part of “On My Block.” I was already a fan of the show when I got the audition back in season 3 and knew that my character would be in subsequent seasons so I was ecstatic when I found out that I booked the role. I had a lot of fun from day one of being on the show back in season 3 when we filmed that short scene revealing Isabel and Oscar at the end of the season. It’s the most diverse crew I’ve ever been apart of by far and that was very refreshing, especially as a Latina. I really loved being a part of it. Everyone in the cast and crew was wonderful and it was just a really fun group of people to work with! The fan base for the show is amazing – it really reaches so many people in different places worldwide and the opportunity to interact with them and see how much they love the show and the characters and how some of them pour that love into their own art and dope edits they make has been beautiful.”
Q: Out of all the actors on On My Block, who was your favorite to be around?
A: “Well of course my character Isabel has most of her scenes with Oscar/Spooky so I spent most of my time with Julio Macias. I had a lot of fun hanging out with him. Every day on set was mostly me, Julio, and Eric who plays Ruben Martinez and is the acting coach for the show. They are both such wonderful men and we had a lot of great conversations and fun just doing fun silly little things behind the scenes. I loved working with Julio fleshing out our characters’ relationship and breaking down our scenes together. Honestly, everyone was great!”
Q: What was your favorite part about working with the On My Block cast? And why?
A: “As I mentioned I was already a fan of the show so it’s always great to get to work on a project that you really love. Also, the opportunity to be part of a show that allows brown and black kids to see themselves represented on screen as the leads who are smart and silly and goofy and confident and going through similar situations they may be going through in their lives was a dream come true. I always felt that the cast was so well rounded in the way each actor portrayed their character and then getting to actually create alongside them and be on set watching everyone do their thing was a lot of fun.”
Q: Are you working on any current projects that we should be on the lookout for?
A: “Yes, I am! Actually I am currently in New York City filming a tv show and ugh I will leave it at that haha. It will be out pretty soon so be on the lookout for when I post it on my social media. Also, I have a feature film out on Netflix called the “The Old Ways.” It’s a horror/exorcism movie in which I play one of the leads – Miranda is my character. We were the number four movie on Netflix worldwide when we first launched on the platform and the horror fan community has really been enjoying the film and giving amazing reviews. It’s been called “the greatest exorcism film since ‘The Exorcist” so definitely check it now on Netflix or purchase the Blu-ray with a ton of behind-the-scenes content.”
Q: What are your career goals and what have you been doing to achieve them?
A: “I really just wanna continue working on projects where I really love and care about the story. It’s definitely a goal of mine to end up working on a project where I get to sing as well. When I’m not filming I am usually in class with my amazing teacher and coach, Marjorie Ballentine.”
Q: What are some hobbies you like to do that many people may not know about?
A: “I think most people are probably unaware that I love video games. I definitely don’t get to play as often as I would like to but I do try to give myself that time to get lost in a game for hours when I really need to unwind.”
Q: Where can we find you to keep up with what you are doing?
A: “You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @andreac317. I really do my best to be active on all three and always post what I have coming up and where and when you can watch it.”
