This British vocalist just gave us brand new music!
Singer-Songwriter Kovic is one of the biggest rising UK artists today. He has received over 50 million on his music, his biggest singles being “Drown” and “Somebody”. Now, he’s back with a brand new album entitled “Playing With Fire”.
We had the absolute honor of talking with Kovic on his music journey, his favorite song off of the album, and more!
Q: When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
K: “One of my earliest memories of connecting with something in music deeply was watching Dave Grohl hit drums to Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, that was when I started learning how to play drums, and got pretty obsessive about learning instruments. I think the building blocks started from there really, and I was in my 20’s before I built up the confidence to actually start singing. I got quite deep into academia studying physics and had a very fascinating few years building quantum computers, before realizing around 21 (ish) that I wanted to follow my passion and focus solely on a career as a musician. It’s been a ride!”
Q: Tell us about your brand-new album, “Playing With Fire”.
K: “It definitely has the best songs I’ve made so far on it, the title track itself is a fierce tune and definitely my favorite. I couldn’t be more proud of what it delivers as a whole body of work. My favorite thing about it is that everyone I talk to has a different view on what the best song is, and that’s an important factor for me. No two songs are similar, it’s a real mix of flavors and I couldn’t be happier for it to be out there in the world!”
Q: What is your favorite song off of the album, and why?
K: “The reason I’d choose “Playing WIth Fire” is because it’s one of those songs that you feel in your gut, you know? It punches through with the sonics and the lyrics for me speak volumes. The magic of this song is that it came together extremely quickly and was entirely driven by the ideology of what we wanted to capture in the music. It’s a self-reflection of where we (and so many others) have been through lockdown, through all kinds of confusion, misinformation and disorientation of a really rough time.”
Q: How do you think you have grown since your debut studio album?
K: “I’d say I’m more honest now, and definitely care a lot less of what my critics say. That helped me alot!”
Q: Your voice is incredibly unique and you have an awesome tone. How would you personally describe it?
K: “That’s a really kind thing to say, and for someone who early on struggled with the confidence of performing vocally it’s always a compliment I struggle to take. To describe my own voice is a tricky thing to do without making myself cringe, but I’d say I have a baritone British vocal that doesn’t seem too common in music these days. I always spent my early years mimicking and trying to sound like other artists I idolize, and these days I’m pretty happy to have a sound that is quite different to what people normally hear.”
Q: Who is your biggest music inspiration, and why?
K: “So many to name for different reasons – I’m a general Dave Grohl fan-boy, because he’s a legend. But then I look to Jagger, Freddie Mercury for un-comparable stage presence, and then you have artists like Aretha and Beyonce who have a mix of inspiration not just for what they do vocally, but what they have managed to overcome with uncompromising work ethic and focus. So many more people come to mind and it’s impossible to boil it down to one I’m afraid!”
Q: What are your biggest goals for your music career?
K: “Hold destiny in my own hands, make a better record than my last, and to help newcomers navigate an independent career.”
Q: Where can we follow your amazing journey?
K: “I’m everywhere online as @kovicmusic but the best place by far to go would be kovicmusic.com/mailing-list and signup for all the latest!”
