This viral single is back with a new bop!
Ella Martine is quickly becoming a name to know. After going viral of social media, her career has truly grown. Now, she has received over 1 Million streams on her music, and that’s just Spotify alone!
We had the absolute honor of talking with Ella on all things writing, her favorite male artist, and where to follow her journey!
Q: When did you first realize that you wanted to start a music career?
E: “I began writing poetry in high school; it was always an outlet for me to express myself and what was going on in my life. I played only the violin at the time and hadn’t started incorporating music into my writing. I realized I had a passion for singing and songwriting when I taught myself the guitar and started playing around with melodies. I was able to start making the same kind of music that I enjoyed listening to, which made me really happy and excited to continue learning.”
Q: Tell us about your new single “Debris” with Penance.
E: “Debris is a really special song to me and Mason, who goes by Penance. We wrote it together in one night, the first night we officially met, actually. The idea behind the duet is that I’m trying to reach someone I’ve lost that I can no longer communicate with, and he’s trying to reach me but is too far gone. We use imagery of outer space and debris as metaphors for separation, and I think there’s a lot of room for the listener to interpret and relate to it in their own unique way.”
Q: What has been your favorite release so far and why?
E: “There have been a couple of songs that have been really exciting to me. I put out a full album last February, which was a group of songs that had gone viral on Tiktok. Funny enough, it was an album about characters in Harry Potter, which is easy to laugh about on my end but seeing how it affected the demographic it reached was a really uplifting feeling. It provided comfort to people who really love that world of Harry Potter, and I’m happy they loved the release so much. On the other hand, Love Bomb was a special one because it introduced a new style that I’m starting to lean towards. It has more pop elements than you’ll see in upcoming releases, but that song means a lot to me and I made it with my best friends, so it was a great time overall.”
Q: How would you describe your songwriting process?
E: “I write from experience and my heart. I have a hard time forcing myself to write when I feel like I have nothing to say. I go through writing droughts sometimes, and other times I get a few songs in one day. I usually start with an idea for a story that I want to write about, pick a metaphor that I can convey throughout it, and then start working on melodies. Once I have a lyrically sound song with a strong hook, I’ll send it to my roommates, who are all producers, and get to work.”
Q: What has been your reaction to reaching over 1 Million Music Streams?
E: “It was a super surreal thing, I never expected it to happen, especially with a body of work like that album. Either way, I’m very proud of it. I put those songs up in a hurry and produced them myself on Garageband. Now, I’m in no way a producer, and those songs are in no way mastered or mixed at all, but I think the raw quality of the tracks allowed for a more authentic feeling, one that the listeners had been wanting from me based on feedback from the Tiktok videos.”
Q: If you could feature on a song with any artist, who would it be and why?
E: “Noah Kahan has always been a go-to for me. I love his writing style and his melodies, he’s been one of my favorite artists for years. I think we could make a really beautiful song together, especially as a duet. We have very similar styles, so hearing our voices play out together on a track would fulfill a very big dream of mine.”
Q: What are your biggest goals for your career?
E: “My goal is to be happy in any career path I take. Music makes me happy. I make the kind of music that helped me growing up, so if any young person listens to my songs and feels the way I did listening to my favorite artists, that’s a win for me. I want to travel and do shows across the world, like any artist, and ultimately make a career out of writing songs, but the most important thing for me is to do it in such a way that never makes writing or performing feel like a chore. I don’t see that happening, and I think as long as I’m able to make the music that makes me happy, I’ll be doing this for a very long time.”
Q: Where can we follow your amazing journey?
E: “I post updates on Instagram and Tiktok as much as I can, for now, I’m very focused on getting Debris released on all streaming platforms and starting the process for my next EP. I have a few songs in the works for that project, and I really love where it’s headed so far. I’ll be posting more about that as things fall into place, so for now you can find me on social media and support me as I continue writing, performing, and uploading music!”
