Bailey Spinn has become a Tiktok star with her hilarious POV videos. Bailey has just hit over 6.7 million followers and her social media presence is going from strength to strength.
I caught up with Bailey to find out how she got started, tips on how you too can become the next Tiktok influencer and what she really thinks of the new Tiktok stories feature.
Q: How did you get into Tiktok?
B: “I started making TikTok’s just for fun in 2019, but quarantine is when I really started to get into making videos. I saw someone doing a POV on my for you page and thought it was funny, so I made one of my own. That video ended up being my first to ever hit one million views and I decided to continue. I posted new content every single day and had such a great time doing it! I never could have expected it to go this far but I am incredibly thankful it did. I kept making these POVS despite people telling me they were “cringe” and I love the content that I have created!”
Q: When did you start to feel that this was blowing up?
B: “I was really excited when I first started growing on TikTok. I had always dreamed of being an influencer and never thought it would be possible, but once I saw the numbers going up I decided to stay determined. It’s honestly very overwhelming to know that millions of people all around the world view my content every day. The internet has so much power it astonishes me. I initially started growing quickly but it slowed a few times and I even went through phases where I was losing followers. My account had blown up so quickly and it was hard to keep up with all the interaction I was receiving, but I love that new people find my content entertaining each day!”‘
Q: How did you feel when you started getting followers in the millions?
B: “When I hit one million followers, it was an unreal experience for me. I had dreamed of it ever since I first started and to see the “M” next to the count was an incredible feeling. It was like all of my hard work had paid off. I loved the feeling and I was so excited to keep hitting new milestones. Pretty quickly, one million turned into two and I could not believe my eyes. It felt like a literal dream come true and I stared at it until I could comprehend it. Recently, my growth on TikTok has been insane. Within 4 weeks, 2 million turned into almost 6 million. I had always seen people growing that fast but I never thought it would happen to me. I was blown away by how many people were finding my account and by how much support my videos were getting. It’s an amazing feeling to know that people everywhere are inspired by what I create and would stick around to see what I have to offer.”
Q: Do you think this could now be a career for the future?
B: “I definitely believe that this could be a career in the future! I plan to branch out onto other platforms as well, such as youtube, which would be an even more stable way to build a job and audience. I’m very adamant about saving my money and making sure that I have enough to support myself in the future, even if the app one day disappears. I could see myself making these videos for years and I may be able to even branch out into acting. I believe the career opportunities for this are limitless as every day I continue to grow on different platforms, making the career even more stable!”
Q: Have you had any brand or career opportunities?
B: “Yes! I’ve had many brand opportunities that I never could have dreamed of. I’ve worked with brands like Curology, Revolve, Princess Polly, and more! I love working with brands that I use and support daily so that I can help my followers with whatever they may need. I’m always excited when a new brand reaches out to me and wants to work with me, as it shows that they’re interested in me as a person! I just made a video with Amie skincare and it was super fun! I cannot wait to work with more brands in the future and see what this career has to offer!”
Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career as an influencer on Tiktok?
B: “If someone were to ask me what to do when starting out on TikTok, the first thing I always say is to be consistent. The TikTok algorithm likes when people post every day, I post about 2-5 videos per day and it’s hard work but pays off in the end. I would also say to post content that you actually enjoy, I never force myself to do something I don’t want to just because it’s trendy or may get views. The videos you post should be something you are personally passionate about, and people will start the notice when you represent your love for it. Finally, I would tell them to stay determined and keep their hopes up high. You never know what is going to do well on the platform, sometimes it’s just a big gamble. However, I’d you continue to post even if your views/engagement aren’t where you want them to be, it will absolutely work out in the end!”
Q: What are the pros & cons of being an influencer?
B: “I would say that there are a lot more pros than cons of being an influencer. One pro to me is that I get to inspire other people every day and being a smile on their faces, even through a screen. I love that that people enjoy the content I create and appreciate the work that goes into it every day. Another pro of being an influencer to me is that I have made so many new friends by posting online. One of my best friends at home ended up reaching out through TikTok, and now we cannot be separated. I have also made friends with other creators which is incredible because they understand the effort that goes into everything and we get to bond over the platform. Another pro of being an influencer would have to be seeing all your work pay off.
It is so gratifying to see your video taking off when it took you hours to create, it’s reassuring to me personally! However, one con of being an influencer is the pressure of always being under the watch of millions of people. A lot of people online are very opinionated and will hate on you for absolutely no reason at all. I’ve learned to get past the hate comments, but I still see them. People become incredibly brave when they can just type and say whatever they want without real-life consequences.”
Q: TikTok has just announced that it will be trialling ‘vanishing stories’ features similar to Snapchat, Facebook & Instagram. How do you feel about this and will it change the way you use TikTok?
B: “I am extremely excited about this new feature on TikTok. I think it will be a great way to better engage with fans and let them learn more about you in an easy way. I could share so many things with them I wouldn’t normally be able to like when videos are going up, how my day is going, or even something as simple as my outfit. I think that this will change the way I use TikTok for the better, I’ll be able to be more active on the app even when I’m not posting. It’s difficult to interact with everyone when you get thousands of comments a day, but the stories would be more personal. I can let my followers know what I’m doing other than what’s going on in my POVs. Overall, I think this is a great step forward for the app!”
Q: You create film and edit all your own videos is there a lot of work involved before you click the final button for it to go up?
B: “My favorite places to shop would definitely have to be Aritzia, Brandy Melville, Jaded London, and Whitefox! I always find myself circling back to those sites/stores because I love the way everything fits and looks. I have a pretty broad fashion sense and these places just have the best items that fit my taste!”
Q: What are your goals for the next few years and what’s next for you?
B: “One of my long-term goals for this year is to reach 10 million followers on TikTok. I know I am a long way away, but with persistence and determination, I know I could do it. I would also love to branch out onto new platforms to better engage with my audience and let them learn about me as a person!
I want to work with new brands and build connections with new businesses to better my marketing skills and career path. I hope to possibly start acting or modeling to really make my own dreams come true. Right now, what’s next for me would be to continue posting new content every day and try to interact more on other platforms to build them as well. I’m excited to see what new opportunities come to me in the future!”
